Ngiaw is also a trailblazer in challenging gender stereotypes within the composing world: “One stereotype I’ve worked hard to break is that women composers, especially women of color, aren’t typically considered for large-scale, action-heavy projects.” Her dedication to her craft is evident in her reflection on her career: “Every step of my career has always stayed true to my love and passion for storytelling.

BAFTA has unveiled its 2024 BAFTA Breakthrough cohort, which includes up and coming creatives working in film, games and television from the U.S., U.K.and India.

It was incredibly fun to use a wide array of world instruments to represent the different alien tribes and their cultures. For Lacus, a fisherman’s village filled with community and family, I incorporated African instruments like the bolon, kalimba, and balafon into the score. The concept art, with its textural and intertwined infrastructures, inspired me to create a theme that is syncopated and polyrhythmic, reflecting the village’s vibrant spirit. In contrast, for Solas, the advanced city of Orbona, I opted for plucked instruments such as the Korean Gayageum, Sanjo, and Chinese Liuqin and Dan Nhi, layered with the grandeur of a Mongolian choir to underscore its sophistication. The theme’s meter, an unexpected 5/4, adds to its distinctly different and otherworldly feel.

Being an integral part of the storytelling process has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m honored to contribute to such an amazing project.

The music for WondLa celebrated diversity, with each instrument playing a crucial role in bringing Tony DiTerlizzi's vivid characters and cultures to life. In my approach, I carefully chose instruments to authentically represent the different backgrounds of WondLa's tribes.

It was amazing to attend Comic-Con this week as a panelist for two amazing panels - ‘Hollywood Game Changers’ and ‘The Art of Scoring for Animation’.

My scoring approach for WondLa was driven by its rich, epic world and dynamic characters. I aimed to create a diverse sonic landscape blending orchestral elements, world music, and synths. This approach allowed me to reflect the unique qualities of each location and alien tribe in WondLa, establishing a distinct sonic identity and enhancing the audience's immersion.

"My main objective is to serve the story, support the vision and that's what's the difference between a film composer and a composer. It's like you really are there to help, were there to serve. Whenever I feel that I can support the director's vision or the purpose of it, I feel like I've done my job."

Ngiaw’s music for Glamorous can be heard in full on July 7th, when the full soundtrack of her music for the show will be released courtesy of Lakeshore Records. “Madolyn” and “Glamorous by Madolyn” are perfect primers for the soundtrack, showcasing the pop music influences and lighthearted tone that Ngiaw curated for the series.

Joy Ngiaw (Blush, Rescued by Ruby) has recently been scoring the upcoming Netflix original series Glamourous. The show is created by Jordon Nardino (Star Trek: Discovery, Quantico) and stars Miss Benny, Kim Cattrall, Zane Phillips, Jade Payton, Michael Hsu, Ayesha Harris and Graham Parkhurst.

"Her process includes a meet and greet with the filmmakers as she likes to connect with them, learn about the story and what inspired them to tell the story. In her opinion, this enriches not only her life as a music composer but also as a human being. The meeting with the filmmakers helps her find out the purpose and message of the story to create the music palette. She says, “The beauty of being a composer is that you get to work with so many people and I believe everyone has a unique story to tell. Even before writing anything, the conversation with the director is most important to me.”
